Elastic separators are tiny rubber bands (or occasionally wires)
that go in between your teeth to make room for the orthodontic bands
you will have placed on your teeth next time. It is very important
that the spacers stay in place until you come back to get your bands
on.
- Avoid eating sticky and chewy candy such as taffy, toffee, tootsie
rolls, skittles, starbursts, twizzlers, caramels, gummy bears,
snickers, now-n-laters, etc.
- Avoid chewing gum – this includes sugar free as well.
- Avoid flossing your teeth where the spacers are, this does NOT
get you off the hook flossing everywhere else.
- Avoid touching the spacers with your fingertips or anything else,
such as toothpicks. It is easy to mistake the spacer for
food caught between your teeth so be careful.
- Brush your teeth like you normally do (using a waterpik is fine
if this is part of your routine).
- Take acetaminophen for discomfort if necessary. Soreness
may occur due to the pressure separators put on your teeth.
- Call us as soon as you can if a separator comes out for any reason. We
will let you know if you need to come in to see us to have it replaced.
- Call if you are extremely uncomfortable or if you thing something
just isn’t right.
- Separators will be removed before the bands are placed on your
teeth.
