You had your rapid palatal expander (RPE) cemented to your teeth
today. The expander will widen your upper jaw. It is
used to create more space for your teeth, to correct a crossbite,
or to allow our facemask to work properly. If you are not sure
why you need the RPE appliance, please ask any one of the staff members.
Turn it exactly as you were shown in the office. The “key” goes
into the hole and is turned towards the back of your mouth, NEVER
towards the front.
After turning your appliance for several days, you will start to
notice a gap between your front teeth that will get bigger every
day. This is actually a great thing!! It shows the appliance
is doing it’s job, and don’t worry, the gap is only temporary.
The hardest thing about your RPE is eating. Please take very
small bites of food and chew really well until you are used to your
expander. It can also effect your speech the first few days,
but this also will pass. We also recommend you avoid stringy
foods such as celery and oranges while you have an expander, and
absolutely NO chewing gum.
We will see you every few weeks to check on your progress. If
you are unable to make your check-up appointment, please stop turning
the expander until we are able to see you. This avoids any
over turning.
If you think anything is wrong with your expander, please call us
as soon as you can. If you are in pain (more than briefly right
after you turn your appliance), or if you can’t open or close
your mouth, that is an emergency. Call the office right away. A
common problem is not being able to find the hole, which is an easy
fix. Just call the office and we will get you in to correct
it. Good luck with your new appliance, and do call if you have
any questions.
