Congratulations on getting your braces off! You are now
into the retention phase of your treatment. Retainers are
very important to the teeth because now that the braces are off
the teeth have a strong tendency to go back to where they came
from.
It is very important to wear your retainers as we have instructed
you in order to hold your teeth in their new positions. Your
top retainer should be worn all the time, taking it out ONLY
when you 1. EAT, 2. BRUSH, 3. PLAY a sport where a mouth guard
is worn. When you brush your teeth be sure to brush your
retainer as well, or you may also use a denture cleaner. When
your retainer is not in your mouth, the only place it should
be kept is in the case we have given you. Never put your
retainer in your pocket, leave it in the car, or wrap it up in
a napkin. Wrapping your retainer up in a napkin will make
it very easy for you, or someone else, to throw your retainer
away. If you have pets at home, especially a dog, make
sure you keep your retainer in the case and put it up and out
of reach. Dogs love to chew on retainers!!
If your retainer
is lost, broken, or just not fitting right please call the office
so we may fix the problem. Always remember to bring in your retainer with you to every appointment!!
